Buildings and structures, from ground investigation to fabrication drawings.

We design new buildings and structures to the Eurocodes and their UK and Greek National Annexes. Steel and steel–concrete composite construction is our specialism; geotechnical and reinforced-concrete design is done in-house, so a project does not have to be split between consultants — and the demanding analysis stays with the people who designed the structure.

Steel and composite buildings

Our core work. Full structural design of steel-framed and composite buildings — schemes, member and stability design, seismic design, drawings and calculation packages for building control or Greek permit submission.

Portal-frame industrial buildings; multi-storey steel and composite frames with composite slabs and beams; braced and moment-resisting systems; long-span trusses and roofs; facade, canopy and stadium substructures; mezzanines and strengthening of existing steelwork.

  • Second-order and stability design (Consteel, SCIA Engineer)
  • Composite floors and beams to EN 1994, including demountable and reusable systems
  • Seismic design and ductile detailing to EN 1998; capacity-designed connections
  • General-arrangement, member and connection drawings
EN 1993-1-8 · component-based FE

Connection design and fabricator support

For fabricators and contractors who have the routine work covered and need the critical-path items done fast and defensibly.

Bolted and welded connections designed and verified by finite-element analysis — moment and simple connections, splices, base plates, truss nodes, hollow-section joints and non-standard geometry that catalogue software rejects. We work from your IFC or DXF model and return drawings and reports that drop straight back into your workflow.

  • FE verification of connections (CYPE Connect)
  • Fabrication-ready connection drawings, bolt and weld schedules
  • Independent checking of connections designed by others
  • Tonnage and option studies at tender stage

Geotechnical and reinforced-concrete design

Led by George Spanos, chartered engineer with twenty years in geotechnical and concrete practice, including deep excavations in dense urban sites and offshore ground investigation.

Interpretation of ground investigation; shallow and piled foundations; basements, retaining walls and braced or anchored excavations with staged construction analysis; soil–structure interaction; reinforced-concrete buildings, cores and podiums; seismic design of concrete structures.

  • Foundation and retaining-structure design to EN 1997 and EN 1998-5
  • Reinforced-concrete frames, slabs, walls and cores to EN 1992 and EN 1998
  • Construction-stage analysis and site supervision
  • Greek permit submissions (στατική μελέτη) and building-control packages

Specialist analysis and FE-assisted design

For the parts of a project where the code rules run out — and where our research background is the difference between a conservative guess and an answer.

Nonlinear and second-order analysis of frames and members; finite-element design of connections and irregular steel details with imperfections and material models documented so a checker can accept them; performance-based seismic assessment of existing steel and concrete buildings using nonlinear static and dynamic analysis; robustness and disproportionate-collapse checks; retrofit and strengthening schemes.

  • Geometrically and materially nonlinear analysis (Consteel, SCIA Engineer)
  • FE verification of connections and details (CYPE Connect)
  • Pushover and time-history seismic assessment to EN 1998-3; strengthening design
  • Independent peer review of designs and analyses by others

Parametric and BIM-integrated delivery

For projects with repetition or geometry that changes late.

We build the analysis model parametrically and link it to the drawing model, so a design revision becomes a re-run rather than a redraw. Coordination with architects and detailers through IFC.

  • Parametric analysis models linked to detailing software
  • Automated general-arrangement drawings from the analysis model
  • Option and optimisation studies for steel tonnage

How a project runs

Four stages, one point of contact.

Stage 1

Brief and scope

A short call, then a written scope: what is designed, to which codes, what is delivered and when. Fee proposal issued before work starts.

Stage 2

Scheme

Structural system, grid, member sizes and foundation concept, with the tonnage and cost drivers made explicit while they can still be changed.

Stage 3

Detailed design

Analysis, member and connection design, geotechnical design, drawings and the calculation package for building control or permit.

Stage 4

Construction support

Fabricator queries, shop-drawing review, site inspection and supervision where required, and as-built records.

Have drawings or a brief? Send them over.

We will tell you within one working day what the structure needs and what it would cost to design.
